Sweden generally followed Germany in terms of tank design. Indeed in the years between the wars, when Germany was prevented from building tanks, it provided resources for the Germans. Even so Sweden, which has always maintained a highly developed armaments industry, had many unique ideas on the subject which are reflected in a family likeness in designs produced up to 1940.
The M/40 L was the first of these designs to enter quantity production and it served the Swedish Army throughout the war years and beyond. In later years some were sold on to the Dominican Republic and even had some confrontations with modern American armour.
