When the west of england line was re-signaled part of the work involved switching control of the level crossing over to basingstoke.... a side effect of this was that when the station was unstaffed there would be no step free access to platform two, before the scheme passengers were able to use a staffed barrow crossing ..... to fix this the road crossing was altered to allow pedestrians to access the platforms via two new ramps installed adjacent to the barriers meaning that they can cross the line safely along with the cars, one other bonus of the scheme was that able bodied pedestrians are now able to cross the line using the footbridge while the barriers are down
