QUOTE FROM NETWORK RAIL MEDIA CENTRE
The Autumn quarter is historically the worst for railway performance, however the industry continues to work hard to tackle the problem. Initiatives include:
· Between 1 October and 13 December Network Rail receives adhesion forecasts twice a day from specialist weather forecaster Meteo Group. This allows resources to be planned more effectively.
· 32 multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) operate across the network and 23 rail head treatment trains (RHTT's) which move around the network cleaning the top of the rail by spraying it with a water jet at very high pressure (1500 bar) to blast away leaf mulch.
· 82 two-man ‘leaf-busting’ teams available 24/7 at key locations to scrub the top of the rails by hand with a sand-based treatment
· Over recent years, there has been an extensive vegetation management programme in place to either remove trees which shed leaves directly onto the track or replace existing vegetation with varieties of trees
